Department of English

English Department

The Department of English embraces as its guiding principles, the aims of the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) and the needs of the learners. The syllabus is therefore geared towards the adolescent who is experiencing the transitional stage from puberty to adulthood in a bi-lingual society where one variety is accorded prestige and the other is erroneously viewed as a conglomeration of errors. As a result, the curriculum allows for teachers to stimulate the development of the linguistic, physical, physiological and emotional well being of the students. Here at Munro College, the interaction between the teacher and the student serves to facilitate language growth and ultimately, communicative and linguistic competence and performance through a multiplicity of oral and written exercises. The core curriculum covers communication studies, Language and literature.

Considering that language is the source of human life and power, the main purpose of the Language Arts/ Communications Studies programme is to promote language awareness and language growth among the student population with specific focus on competence and performance. Literature is inextricably intertwined in the language programme. This is an important aspect of the syllabus as it provides vicarious experience and important insights by means through which students can understand much about themselves and the society.

Here at Munro College, the members of the Department of English works tirelessly to build and improve on the students' language and literary skills. The results have been rewarding as the passes at the CSEC and CAPE have steadily increased over a three year period.

The Students have embraced the innovative and proactive measures being implemented by the teachers in the department. One of the programmes was a "Student of The Month" award. A certificate and cash were awarded to the students in each class (forms 1-6) that had the highest average in english. This was sponsored by Dr. Nigel Darmaine of 4E. This programme was halted as we lost sponsorship due to unforeseen circumstances. The idea is not lost though and we will strive to seek sponsorship again. The teachers were not left out as the too got a "Teachers of The Month" award. This was a day pass at a hotel on the north coast . From all indications. this was a welcomed change.

The sixth, fifth and first formers have benefited from the combined effort of the the teachers who host marathon study sessions and workshops prior to major examinations. The feedback from the students gives a general feeling of appreciation.

It is through the concerted efforts of the committed staff that the Department of English continues to be that flagship department of the school. The Department of English will continue to spawn eloquent and confident young men who will be formidable forces in any speech environment because of their acquisition and pragmatic use of standard English.
